You have planned a romantic home movie night with your girlfriend for the special occasion. Everything seems to be perfect from tea, cake to room decoration… suddenly the AVI movie file is corrupted. Unfortunately, the movie you intend to watch is not available on Netflix. You also don’t want to download torrents because it takes time and the quality may not be as expected. Don’t panic, your romantic plans can still be salvaged. Here’s how to quickly fix AVI file errors.
Reasons for corrupted AVI files
To solve a problem completely, you always need to know the cause. AVI errors are mainly caused by bad sectors on the hard drive such as viruses, electromagnetic interference, software errors that occur during creation.
AVI is a sub-format of Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) and it splits data into 2 blocks. Essentially, these blocks are indexed by an optional third block, which provides the data location for the program reading the file. This third block is usually the problem area. Simply put, if you can fix the indexes, you can probably fix the AVI files.
Solution to fix AVI file not working
You can find a lot of AVI file repair apps on Google. In many cases, it may cost you to do so. However, if you don’t want to lose a dime then use DivFix++ and VLC Media Player.
1. Use DivFix++ to fix corrupted AVI files
DivFix++ hasn’t been updated for a few years, but it’s still the most used app to edit AVI files and works perfectly.
To get started, download the application to your computer. The application is downloaded as a zip file. When extracting the file, you can use the EXE file right away without installation.
Opening the app for the first time, you’ll see a screen with just a few options. Let’s focus on the three checkboxes in the lower right hand corner.
If the AVI file does not open, then make sure to put a checkmark in it Cut Out Bad Parts. It will split out parts of the video that can’t be salvaged, but at least you’ll be able to play and watch the rest. It’s also smart to keep a copy of the original file.
Using DivFix++ to edit AVI files is a two-part process. First, you need to remove the old indexes. Click Add Files and point the application to your corrupted file. You can also click Check Errors before getting started, but that’s an unnecessary step. If your file isn’t working then you definitely just want to fix it as quickly as possible.
Once the file has been added, it will show up in the box Source Files. You can add multiple files to create a queue. Then click on Strip Index. If the process is successful, you will see a confirmation in Log Windows.
Now you need to rebuild the index and fix any other error parts of the video. In the upper part of the application window, you click on folder icon and choose a location for the new file.
When the file is ready, you will again see the confirmation in Log Windows.
Thus, the newly created file can launch perfectly.
2, Use VLC Media Player to fix corrupted AVI files
If you don’t want to use DivFix++ you can use VLC Media Player. You should make a copy on your system before doing anything technical on your computer because it comes packed with features. Like DivFix++, the app is available for Mac and Linux.
If you try to open the corrupted AVI file with VLC, you will see the error message on the screen:
You click on Build index and let VLC do its job. This process may take a long time.
If you have a lot of corrupted AVI files and don’t want to see error messages on the screen often, you can have VLC automatically fix the files when you open them. You open the VLC app and navigate to Tools > Preferences.
In the new window, click on the tab Inputs / Codecs and scroll down to section Files. In the item Files, you find Damaged or incompleted Avi files and choose Always fix from the drop-down menu. Then click on Save when you’re ready.
Note: Use VLC to fix the corrupted AVI file not replacing the actual file. It only temporarily fixes corrupted files by saving a new index in the application’s memory while the file is in use. If you try to view this file in another media player, you still get a playback error.
Above is an article that shows you how to fix AVI files not working by using two useful software, which are DivFix++ and VLC Media Player. Thus, you can continue to enjoy your relaxing time with your favorite movie.
